Inner Leg and Groin Pain

The adductor muscles consist of 5 muscles that are located on the inside of the thigh. These muscles are responsible for bringing the leg and thigh towards the body or midline of the body and stabilizing the leg while walking. Pain from trigger points in the adductor muscle group will typically cause pain in the inner thigh or groin area. Individuals who hyperpronate may experience trigger points in the adductor muscles due to the muscles being overworked and compensating for walking on the inside of the foot.

Causes

Sitting for extended periods of time: When you sit for hours on end, your hip flexor muscles are stuck in a shortened position. Over time, this can lead to them becoming tight and stiff, often causing that familiar ache in the front of your hip when you finally stand up or try to extend your leg.

Sudden overload in the muscles: Applying a force or resistance to a muscle that is significantly greater than its current capacity can result in an immediate injury. This sudden overload often causes muscle strains or tears as the muscle fibers are unable to withstand the excessive tension.

Poor Posture: Poor posture continuously stresses certain muscle groups, forcing them to work harder to maintain an imbalanced body alignment. When you slump or stand/sit unevenly, specific muscles get stuck in a shortened position while others are stretched thin and weakened. Take your inner thighs, for example. If you’re constantly slouching or have an asymmetrical stance, the muscles on the inside of your thighs —the adductor muscles —might have to work extra hard to keep your pelvis and hips stable.

Inner Thigh Pain

When you feel deep, nagging inner thigh pain, it often stems from muscle knots in the largest groin muscle, the adductor magnus. The discomfort usually focuses along the midline of the inner thigh, presenting as a deep, heavy ache that can sometimes run down toward the knee. You’ll find the pain gets worse when you’re doing activities like quick side-stepping, heavy squats, or even just getting out of a car in a tight spot. Because this muscle is so large, its knots can easily mimic deeper problems, such as hamstring strain or even hip joint issues. The inner thigh tissue is extremely sensitive to pressure, and it leaves your hip feeling guarded and restricted.

Hot Stinging Pain on the Inside of Thigh

If you have a strange, hot, stinging pain on the inside of your thigh, the source is often muscle knots in the long, thin muscle running down the inner leg, the gracilis. The discomfort usually focuses along the inner thigh and knee, presenting as a sharp, superficial burning pain that feels very close to the skin. You’ll find the pain gets worse when you’re doing quick movements that rotate the leg, like pivoting while walking, kicking a ball, or sitting with your knees tightly crossed. Because the gracilis attaches near the inner knee, its knots can easily mimic deeper problems like nerve irritation or pes anserine tendinitis. The muscle line is often susceptible to pressure, and it leaves your knee and inner thigh feeling tight and restricted, limiting how easily you can straighten your leg.

Groin Pain

When you’re dealing with deep groin pain, the problem often lies with muscle knots in the small, deep muscle high up in the pelvis, the pectineus. The discomfort usually focuses very deep in the groin crease, presenting as a sharp, intense pinch that can feel like it’s inside the hip joint. You’ll find the pain gets significantly worse when you’re doing actions that flex or cross the leg, such as bringing your knee toward your chest, crossing one leg over the other, or climbing stairs quickly. The pectineus is a key hip stabilizer; its muscle knots can easily mimic deeper problems, such as hip flexor strain or a labral tear in the hip joint.

Dull Achiness Deep Inside

That nagging feeling of dull achiness deep inside your upper thigh often points to muscle knots in the long, superficial muscle that crosses your thigh, the sartorius. The discomfort usually focuses along the inner and front part of the thigh, presenting as a deep, underlying ache that feels very pervasive and fatiguing. You’ll find the pain gets worse when you’re doing activities that involve bending and rotating the hip, like sitting tailor-style (cross-legged), walking up hills, or stepping up high. Because the sartorius crosses both the hip and knee, its knots can easily mimic deeper problems like hip joint instability or pes anserine tendinitis near the knee. The muscle line along the inner thigh is often sensitive to pressure, and it leaves your entire thigh feeling tight and restricted, limiting your comfortable range of motion.
