When enjoying outdoor activities, it’s vital to have the right clothing to stay comfortable in varying temperatures and weather conditions. Layering is a versatile technique that allows you to adjust your warmth as needed. You can easily shed or add clothing by wearing multiple layers to maintain optimal comfort throughout your adventure.
The Three Essential Layers
- Base Layer: This is the layer closest to your skin. Its primary function is to wick away moisture, keeping you dry and comfortable. Look for base layers made from moisture-wicking fabrics.
- Mid Layer: The mid-layer provides insulation and warmth. Fleece jackets, down vests, and synthetic insulated jackets are popular choices. Choose a mid-layer that offers the appropriate level of warmth for your activity and expected temperatures.
- Outer Layer: The outer layer acts as a shield against the elements like the wind and the rain. It should be waterproof and breathable to keep you dry in rain or snow. Consider a hardshell jacket or a soft-shell jacket, depending on the level of protection you need.
